The Death of Mini-DV

Mixed-Media Sculpture

2025

  • “I do the tricks! Not you!”

  • “The Death of Mini-DV” is a mixed-media sculpture based on my experiences making skateboard films and working with vintage camera equipment. Due to the rough nature of making skate films the cameras used are often damaged beyond repair, so I decided to turn one of these decommissioned cameras into a cartoonish taxidermy resembling some sort of twisted cyborg mother of Bambi.

  • The legs were salvaged from a papier-mâché christmas ornament I found in a gutter which I reinforced with resin. I attached the legs to the camera with a bolt and joined the forms with epoxy clay. I painted the legs and the fisheye lens by hand with acrylic paint. I then attached the beast to a custom wood pedestal with a mound of nice green artificial turf. I carved the arrow from a stick in my back yard and stuck it into the tape mechanism, complete with a disemboweled tape spilling out to add to the viscera of it all.

  • This sculpture appeared in the “Common Shred“ group art show at Harrington Art Studio in June of 2025 among works by nationally known artists such as Trent Call, Mike Murdock, and Jimbo Phillips. It was sold to a private collector in 2026.
