“The image calls into question what the reality is and if it even exists.”

A skateboard graphic for Milosport Snow and Skate shop in Millcreek, Utah.

According to local legend the first skateboards in Utah were actually made from felled trees, and were used to transport lumber down the canyon to be used to build skateparks in the valley. I don’t know if that’s true, but I wanted to make a graphic that was reminiscent of the outdoor centered culture of Utah, as well as being a reference to the material skateboards are made of: wood.

In creating the design I was inspired by vintage typography, particularly mid-century motel signage, and Baudrillard's four stages of simulacra.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Board graphic for the local SLC skateboard brand Gallery Skateboards.

The graphic was inspired by spending time with my Mom at art museums and the John Hughes film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.

Skateboards are usually made with a variety of dyed wood veneers. I chose to leave parts of this graphic transparent to showcase these veneers and to easily add variations of color to a single illustration without recoloring the art. In order to not clash with any of the colors I elected to create the graphic in a monochrome palette.

The graphic was well received by the community, and was one of the best selling models offered by the brand.
